If you stop believing in Santa, does all the Christmas magic come undone?
This year was a milestone for our family. (See my post on Dec. 12.) I remember being told as a kid who was old enough to know better, (at Easter, probably to cushion the blow), and I thought it was just the coolest thing that my parents had pulled it off all those years! I wasn't really expecting, as a parent, to be unable to determine Santa's status in my own kids' minds.
Just two summers ago, it was revealed to me by my older son, Grayson, now 11, that he hadn't believed for a couple of years! "It's just scientifically impossible" he said, but he also admitted that he was afraid it would all come to an end if we knew that he knew. Asher, however, never doubted. Until.... the wrapping paper he had seen in his stocking just last year was now being hauled out of the closet to be used as a family project! Wait a minute!! So, my husband and I had to go into "pick-up-the-pieces-and-make-this-okay" mode. And, almost a week later, it is. He does keep saying, "It WOULD be fun if..," and I keep thinking to myself, "Nothing has changed, my love, it will still be fun!"
That's a great tie-in with the prompt. I love the story and the Santa.
ReplyDeleteAwww that is a lovely post, I've been wondering myself what to do when the question eventually comes up. My 3 year old is totally infatuated with Santa but I noticed my six year old looked a little uncomfortable on his knee this year in our annual photo with Santa and was shy which was unusual. He still believes but he is starting to question the logic behind it. He said to me the other day that he thought that the whole flying reindeer thing was a bit out there heheheheh. I hope we have a few years left of this magic. I love your piece it's beautiful those rich colours and lovely detail, this is a lovely illustration for this weeks prompt!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is beautiful, we still did Santa until my son was 12, we just said believing was part of the fun and as long as we believed Santa would still come.
ReplyDeleteI had my youngest believing until she was 13 years old! I thought she really knew the facts before then but she told me she really did believe in Santa until that ripe age! A mother of one of her friends sold Santa out by accident. Santa still visits us every year regardless, he never held a grudge! My youngest is now 21, Oldest is 34 and married. The Christmas magic might rearrange itself a little, but it will never come undone. Beautiful illustration! ;-D
ReplyDeleteThis is just gorgeous--rich color, rich story. The Christmas spirit is really evident on the front page of your blog! Thanks for stopping by mine.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Krista! Love the story of the boys! David was just seven when he started asking and asking and asking.....just like Grayson, a scientific mind! The kicker was after his seventh Christmas after discussing the different aspects of all things Santa (the reindeer, chimney, etc.)"Mom, does Santa ever die?". In his young mind he couldn't understand how this man could be doing this for the past thousand years! What comforts all of us though is the fact that St. Nicholas WAS real and his spirit lives on....I believe that Christmas magic is the one thing that can never be undone!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing work! Just Fantastic one!
ReplyDeleteRegards and Happy Holidays!

Wow beautiful work Krista! The Santa myth may have come undone, but the Christmas wonder and awe never will. Great story along with your fantastic illustration. It has us all thinking of when we or our kid's believed.
